Both before and after your medical weight loss program, regular exercise will be a crucial part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Though you should stick to any guidelines provided by Dr. Primack and Dr. Ziltzer, a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity per day is typically recommended for all adults. Exercise will help you lose weight, but it will also help your body by:
- Toning muscles
- Increasing energy
- Boosting metabolism
- Lowering blood pressure
- Lowering risk of heart disease
- Tightening loose skin caused by weight loss
As you build up your strength during weight loss in Chandler and Scottsdale, low-impact exercises may be the best to start with. For a while, this may amount to simple daily exercises and regular walking or swimming, but you may find that you tire quickly of the same old routines. After getting approval from your doctor to become more active, consider trying a new activity like the two below to breathe new life into your weight loss workout:
- Golf: Though it may be the sport of choice for retirees, your average game of golf isn’t all leisure. Just make sure to skip the cart and the caddy when you hit the links—walking the full 18 holes and carrying your own clubs is guaranteed to make you sweat. Added bonus: golfing can be an excellent way to reduce stress and you can bring family or friends along to enjoy it with you.
- Tai Chi: This slow-motion exercise has its origins in ancient China, where it was developed as martial art with an added element of meditation. Unlike many other martial arts, tai chi is low impact and can be performed by anyone. The movements are gentle and circular, putting little pressure on the muscles, joints and connective tissue. In addition to burning calories, Tai Chi is regarded as a premier stress management practice, and its daily practice is recognized to reduce risk of heart disease and other stress induced ailments. For the best results, join a class and learn the ropes before trying tai chi on your own.
Once you start to slim down with your weight loss program, you’ll be able to do all sorts of things you never thought yourself capable of. However, that doesn’t mean you have to wait until you’ve hit your ultimate weight loss goal to start having fun.
