Herbal remedies and alternative weight loss methods include the popular HCG diet, as well as other, lesser-known herbal solutions that are advertised to control hunger and increase your body’s ability to burn fat.

Programs like these will often encourage dietary restrictions without supplementing nutrient intake. This can lead to a nutrient deficiency and other serious health problems. Remember, a weight loss program should help you feel stronger and more energized, not weaker.

There are weight loss medications that have gone through testing with the FDA and are scientifically proven to help with weight loss. Herbal remedies don’t have any standards or guidelines they must meet. While there are some herbal remedies that are okay to use as a supplement to other weight loss methods, it is not recommended that you try any herbal supplement without first consulting with your physician.

Medical weight loss programs recognize obesity as a disease and offer comprehensive treatment solutions that often include a combination of dietary strategies, exercise and medication. These programs are physician supervised and offer guidance and support that help participants lose weight at a faster pace than typically achieved through at-home dieting programs.

Medical weight loss programs often feature:

  • Low-calorie or very-low-calorie diet plans
  • Meal replacement products
  • Personal fitness training
  • Weight loss medications
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Behavior modification

Surgical Weight Loss Programs

This form of weight loss treatment is only recommended for people who have struggled with their weight for an extended period of time, have had difficulty losing weight through other methods, and who are willing to make drastic changes to their diet and lifestyle to achieve a healthier weight level.

There are four primary weight loss surgery procedures:

  • Gastric bypass surgery
  • Sleeve gastrectomy surgery
  • Duodenal switch surgery

During a weight loss operation physical changes are made to the stomach, and sometimes to the digestive tract as well. This reduces the capacity of the stomach to limit how much food can be eaten at one time, and in some cases how that food is processed by your body once eaten. This is the most extreme treatment option for obesity available.
