The Many Advantages of Riding a BikePosted: February 8, 2018 in Lifestyle by Craig Primack MD FACP
It was one of your favorite things to do as a kid—to get on your bike and go soaring down the street with your friends. Perhaps as you have grown older the sensation has lost its thrill, especially as more convenient methods of travel take priority in getting to work and helping you run errands. But cycling is still a great pastime, and more than that, it is a wonderful form of exercise that can help you get in shape and burn a lot of calories.
Let’s Go Ride a Bike
It is true what they say about riding a bike. It doesn’t matter how long it has been since the last time that you rode a bike. When you get back on the contraption, it won’t take you but a few peddle-pushes to figure out exactly what to do. From there, it is up to you to push yourself down the street and to feel the wind in your hair as you burn those calories.
One of the biggest advantages of cycling over other cardiovascular activities is that it is low-impact, which means that you can do it even if you have joint or bone problems that would make running or walking long distances potentially painful. What’s more, you can take up cycling indoors or outdoors. This means that it is the perfect activity for any time of the year. Stationary bikes are a staple at every gym, and they are one of the more reasonably priced pieces of cardio equipment if you are looking for something that you can do at home.
If you are up to heading outside, riding your bike around your neighborhood can easily become an evening ritual that is free and healthy. Consider checking out local bike trails to change up the scenery every now and then. The Scottsdale Bike Path in downtown Scottsdale is a beautiful scenic bike ride that takes you along the waterfront and through historic areas.
Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular activity. It helps you burn calories, which supports your weight loss goals. As you are looking for ways to add more activity to your lifestyle, consider dusting off that old set of wheels. After all, there is no better way to spend a beautiful day than riding a bike!
